NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:23 Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad? |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:23 So then, if the whole church gathers together and all of you speak in [unknown] tongues, and outsiders or those who are not gifted [in spiritual matters] or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? |
Subject: should all we be speaking tongues aloud |
Bible Note: Greetings Steve! Certainly, I would agree that the KJV's 'unknown' addition would not be supported by the text. :-) However, I am also concerned about the 'only earthly languages' argument as well. For the most part, nothing is really given in the text to specify if the languages were always known human languages or not. There are a couple of incidents like Acts 2:8, but even in Acts 2:8, the miracles may have been one of hearing, not speaking. :-) Finally, we have 1 Cor. 13 which speaks of the tongue of men and angels. The tongue of angels would certainly not qualify as a known earthly language. I am just naturally hesitant to go beyond what the text actually says, and simply put, nowhere does Scripture say that 'tongues' are always known earthly languages. p.s. - Keep me in your prayers, I had to get 10 stitches in my left hand on Monday. :-( Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
