AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 11:28 But a person must [prayerfully] examine himself [and his relationship to Christ], and only when he has done so should he eat of the bread and drink of the cup. |
Bible Question: Could I have some input on receiving communion? A Non-Mainstream Protestant Church invites all visitors to freely partake in the breaking of bread. A Evangelical Baptist Church suggests that if you have not accepted Christ as your Lord, maybe you should think about waiting before you break bread with them. |
Bible Answer: Based on the context of this passage only Christians should partake "when you come together as a church" (vs 18) ... the church are the called out ones - Christians "the Lord's Supper" (vs 20) ... Only Christians say He is Lord "my brethren" (vs 33) ... Could be talking about the Jews, but it makes more sense Paul was talking to Christians Verses 27ff does mention one other restriction "unworthy manner" I believe some Christians do not understand fully the meaning of the Lord's Supper ... and many churches do not spend enough time for it. |
