NASB | 1 Corinthians 11:10 Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 11:10 Therefore the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, for the sake of the angels [so as not to offend them]. |
Bible Question:
What does "because of the angels" mean in reference to the "symbol of authority?" I don't see where the AMP is going either . . . who is she not to displease? Could "because of the angels" be referring to this? "The cherubim shall have their wings spread upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings and facing one another; the faces of the cherubim are to be turned toward the mercy seat." Ex. 25:20 or perhaps this: "Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each had two touching another being, and two covering their bodies." Ez. 1:11 Both seem to be expressions of reverence. Is this perhaps the point? |
Bible Answer: Hi Mommapbs, The angels are neither male nor female. I see the writer calling for a comparison here. We as flesh need to have a "head" or symbol of authority in order to operate effectively. The angels simply serve the Lord. I would translate the "because of the angels" thus: "as seen through the angels" or "when compared to the angels". 1) 1 Corinthians 11:7, "For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man." Colossians 3:10, "...according to the image of the One who created him..." 1 Cor 12:24b, "But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, that there should be no division in the body , but that the members should have the same care for one another." 2) 1 Cor 11:11, "However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman...all things originate from God." 1 Cor 12:27, "Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church... 3) 1 Cor 11:3, "But I want you to understand that Christ is the *Head of every man, and the man is the head [sic] of a woman, and God is the head [sic] of Christ." Colossians 2:19, NKJ, "and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit togeter by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God." 1 Corinthians 11:3, "...and God is the head of Christ."
