AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 11:10 Therefore the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head, for the sake of the angels [so as not to offend them]. |
Bible Question:
What does "because of the angels" mean in reference to the "symbol of authority?" I don't see where the AMP is going either . . . who is she not to displease? Could "because of the angels" be referring to this? "The cherubim shall have their wings spread upward, covering the mercy seat with their wings and facing one another; the faces of the cherubim are to be turned toward the mercy seat." Ex. 25:20 or perhaps this: "Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each had two touching another being, and two covering their bodies." Ez. 1:11 Both seem to be expressions of reverence. Is this perhaps the point? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Mommapbs, "This is why a woman should have a symbol of authority on her head: because of the angels." 1 Corinthians 11:10 [Holman Christian Standard Bible NT] Here is some commentary for this verse.. "11:10 a symbol. I.e., the covering is the sign of man's authority over the woman. because of the angels. The insubordination of an uncovered woman (signifying her refusal to recognize the authority of her husband) would offend the angels who observe the conduct of believers in their church gatherings (Eph. 3:10; 1 Peter 1:12)." (1) "11:10 symbol of authority. Understood by some to refer to the woman's authority as co-ruler with man in the creation (Gen. 1:26-27). Others take the phrase to refer to the man's authority as properly recognized by the woman in her head covering. angels. Perhaps mentioned here because they are interested in all aspects of the Christian's salvation and are sensitive to decorum in worship (cf. Eph. 3:10; 1 Tim. 5:21)." (2) "11:10 A woman was to wear a covering on her head because of the angels. Evidently God's angels are present at the meeting of the church and actually learn of God's work of grace through the lives and worship of God's people (see Eph. 3:10). symbol of authority: This might be a symbol of the woman's authority to prophesy in the new church age, which was inaugurated with the giving of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (v.5). It also might refer to a symbol of the man's authority over the woman (v.3)." (3) "11:10 angels. Women are to be submissive by wearing the symbol of authority so as not to offend these most holy and submissive creatures who watch the church (cf. Matt. 18:10; Eph. 3:9,10), who were present (Job 38:4,7) at creation, when God designed the order of authority for men and women." (4) "11:10 For this reason a woman should have a symbol of authority [1] on her head, because of the angels. [2]" (5) "[1]sn Paul does not use a word specifying what type of “covering” is meant (veil, hat, etc.). The Greek word he uses here (ejxousiva exousia; translated symbol of authority) could be (1) a figure of speech that may substitute the result (the right to participate in worship) for the appropriate appearance that makes it possible (the covered head). Or it refers (2) to the outward symbol (having the head covered) as representing the inward attitude the woman is to possess (deference to male leadership in the church)." (5) "[2]sn Paul does not explain this reference to the angels and its point is not entirely clear. It seems to reflect an awareness that angels are witnesses to church life (cf. Eph 3:10) and would be particularly sensitive to resistance against God’s created order."
