Bible Question:
Can people today still be "pharisee" and "sadducee" people? If so, what would be the best scripture to give to them to help them understand. Jehovah Shalom, michael03 |
Bible Answer: Hi, Michael... No, the major parties of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes are long gone. The destruction of the Temple, coupled with the diaspora, made them moot. Consequently, they pretty much vanish as entities more than 19 centuries ago. Rabbinical Judaism, though, does have its roots in Pharisaical thinking. In a sense, therefore, the Pharisees sort of won the day. Of course, even this is a broad generalization. Today there are four major "denominations" in Judaism: Orthodox, Hasidic, Conservative, and Reformed. Yet it is hard to find agreement amongst or even within those groupings. You'll find disagreement in thought, faith, and practice. You'll discover that even Zionism is hotly debated. Members of one group will even deny that the members of another group are Jews at all. Michale, the rest of the Western gentile world is pretty much dominated by Greek thinking. Hence, I believe, your request for a verse "to help them understand." Remember this verse? "For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles." (1 Corinthians 1:22-23 ESV) That statement of Paul pretty much says it all regarding Jews and gentiles. The lost gentiles you encounter will think the gospel message is simply silly. The lost Jews you encounter have a huge block that they won't be able to get past. "...but to those WHO ARE CALLED, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men." (1 Corinthians 1:24-25 ESV, my emphasis) So, Michael, pray, live the truth, speak the truth, and let God do the calling. Therein is our hope to bring the lost to Christ. We have the easy part. God has the difficult part. It is a lot less confusing if we are careful not to get mixed up over responsibilities. :-) In Him, Doc |
