Bible Question:
It seems that many parents name their girl children "Sarah" I'm wondering what's so great about Sarah? After all perhaps if Abraham had had a different wife things would have turned out better. She did not believe God, took matters into her own hands and when the outcome was disastrous, sent her maidservant and illegimite child away. So once again, what is so special about Sarah other than the name meanining "princess". |
Bible Answer: Dear Nadege, Welcome to the forum! Isn't it amazing that of all the people who lived, the stories of only a few were included by the Holy Spirit in Scripture? What's more, God actually chooses a particular man -- an idolater, living amongst a people of idolatry -- and his half-sister, to be the parents from whose seed God would use to bless such a multitude. Sarah certainly understood her own weaknesses, she affirms that laughter you mentioned, while still marveling at the work of God, when she says, "God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me. Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age." (Genesis 21:6-7 ESV) In addition, the faith God wrought in her is commemorated in the Bible's "Hall of Fame" (Hebrews 11:11). Furthermore, Peter even uses her as an example of the Godly submission that adorns "holy women" (1 Peter 3:6). The amazing thing isn't that God chose Sarah, given so little merit. The amazing thing is that He has chosen anyone, since we all have such vast demerit! I am a physical as well as spiritual child of Abraham. Nevertheless, when I think of the Patriarchs, I marvel at God's grace and mercy. In Him, Doc |
