Bible Note: The next aspect or blessing of salvation in the ordo salutis is the gospel call or the effective call. It is also known broadly as the effectual calling. The previous two aspects of salvation, election and predestination, occur outside of the believer, that is, they are objective. This is the first of the subjective aspects. "Effective calling is an act of God the Father, speaking through the human proclamation of the gospel, in which He summons people to Himself in such a way that they respond in saving faith." --Wayne Grudem See Romans 1:6, 7, 8:28, 11:29, 1 Cor 1:2, 26, 7:20, Eph 1:18, 4:4, Phil 3:14, Jude 1, 2 Tim 1:9, Heb 3:1, 2 Peter 1:10, Rev 17:14, etc. "Effectual calling is the work of God's Spirit, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our wills, He doth persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the Gospel." --Westminster Shorter Catechism (Question 31) When the person is effectually called by God through the Word and the Holy Spirit: o God calls them "to be conformed to the image of His Son" (Rom 8:29) o God calls them "out of darkness into his marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9) o God calls them "into the fellowship of His Son" (1 Cor 1:9; cf. Acts 2:39) o God calls them to "belong to Jesus Christ" (Rom 1:6) o God calls them to "be saints" (Rom 1:7; 1 Cor 1:2) o God calls them into peace (1 Cor 7:15; Col 3:15) o God calls them into holiness (1 Thes 4:7) o God calls them into patient endurance of suffering (1 Pet 2:20-21; 3:9) o God calls them to eternal life (1 Tim 6:12) In Him, Doc "A man may be evidently of God’s chosen family, and yet though elected, may not believe in the doctrine of election. I hold that there are many savingly called, who do not believe in effectual calling, and that there are a great many who persevere to the end, who do not believe in the doctrine of perseverance. We hope that the hearts of many are a great deal better than their heads. We do not set their fallacies down to any willful opposition to the truth as it is in Jesus, but simply to an error in their judgments, which we pray God to correct. We hope that if they think us mistaken too, they will reciprocate the same Christian courtesy; and when we meet around the cross, we hope that we shall ever feel that we are one in Christ Jesus." --Charles Hadon Spurgeon |
