Bible Note: Let’s take I Corinthians 1: 26-31 in context (using KJV): 18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. The word of salvation is foolishness to the world, but to those of us who are saved – it is the power of God 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. What wisdom will God destroy, obviously not the wisdom of God, but the wisdom of the world to whom the word of salvation is foolishness. 20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? With the wisdom of God, the wisdom of the world is for naught. 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. The wisdom of the world doesn’t allow us to know God and once we learn the wisdom of God we will that. Paul speaks by figure of speech when he says that the “foolishness of preaching”, he is not saying that it is foolish to preach, but that to the world, that which we preach, namely Jesus, is foolishness. 22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Interestingly enough the Jews, Israel, has always required signs from God. As far as Christ being crucified… instead of the signs of the kingdom promised by the prophets, the One who claimed to be their Messiah was crucified. This staggered them. That aside, to those that believe and are saved – Christ crucified (and his resurrection) shows forth the power and wisdom of God 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. What the world calls the foolishness of God is wiser than any of man’s wisdom; and what the world sees as the weakness of God is stronger than the strongest of men. 26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: “for you see your calling” is best rendered “for see those who God has sent to call you”. The rest then would best read “they are not wise men after the wisdom of the world, they are not mighty according to the wisdom of the world, they are not noble according to the wisdom of the world. 27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; God chose that which is foolish to the world to bring to shame that which is wise to the world and God chose that which is considered weakness by the world to bring to shame that which is considered strong by the world. 28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: “base” is literally without family and “despised” is “counted as nothing”. In the context of the passage, that which the world considers foolish, despised, worthless – that is what God has chosen because that is who can accept the wisdom of God, because to the world, the wisdom of God is foolishness. By His choice God bring to no effect the things of the world. 29 That no flesh should glory in his presence. If the “great” of the world, they that call the wisdom of God foolishness were able to be saved, they could stand in the presence of God and boast how their wisdom saved them and not God. 30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: 31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. But we that are saved are of God in (or by) Christ, and God has made Christ to us wisdom (true wisdom, not world wisdom), righteousness (the holiness of God), sanctification (set apart by God for God’s purpose), and redemption (bought back). So that if we boast, our only boast is the saving work of Jesus Christ and the grace of God. Verse 31 is quoted from Jer 9:23 |
