Bible Question:
Are Christians required to pay tithes? |
Bible Answer: Greetings, Some people believed that tithing started with the Law of Moses in the old covenant however this is not the case, The bible says that Abraham paid tithes (Gen 14:18-21) therefore tithing was not under the law of the OT. In the chapter about tithing in Malache (3) people often fail to read or just plain ignore verse 6 that says "I, the LORD, never change." After saying this He continues on to say that if you do not tithe you are robbing Him. Tithing was not done away with when the new covenant came into being. We are all required to pay 10 percent of our gross income. 1Cor 19:13-14 says "Don't you realize that those who work at the temple get their food from the temple? Don't those who help at the altar get a share of what is on the altar? In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who spread the Good News should earn their living from the Good News". The priests in the OT lived off of the tithes of the people, the same as they should do today. If you have not been paying your tithes it is the same as any other sin - you repent (change the way you think and act) and God will forgive you and you can start fresh to be obedient. Hope this helps. prayon |
