Bible Note: Hi Tim, Thanks for your thoughts and questions on this passage. It is good to study and worth our while- even though we may not agree:-) I could say these chapters describe the same person. They describe my and (at times) my walk and struggle. Though I may admittedly not be the most "spiritual Christian", Romans 6-8 are fitting. Briefly, here is my take. First, Rom. 6 describes the believers death to sin in principle (6:11). Paul qualifies this in 6:19. We are to reckon ourselves to be dead to sin, though the sin nature still exists in us. Second, Romans 7 is descriptive of myself at times. Brother, the "been there, done that" cliche applies for sure. I can very much relate to the struggle (7:20). I believe that most of us- if we're honest- would admit the ongoing battle (Gal. 5:16-17) How can we not say this is Paul and also not relate it to ourselves? I can't. Additionally, the grammar is just too specific to say he's referring to someone else- at least in my mind. Lastly, Romans 8 assures us that, "there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus (en christo). The sin nature still dwells in us, but we are not under the condemnation of the law. Better said, the claims of the law were met when Paul was put to death in the person of a Substitute. God's law still stands in all of its righteousness, but Paul's ( and our) relationship to it has changed. He (and we) are no longer under its dominion and condemnation.
