Bible Question: What does Romans 7:14 to 8:2 mean? What does Romans 8:1 mean? |
Bible Answer: Hi, there... That's a pretty tall order. I believe you really have to understand Romans chapter 1 through 8 as a whole unit. John Piper does a pretty good job of Romans at the following link. http://www.monergism.com/thethreshold/articles/piper/romans.html Your second question -- on the meaning of 8:1 -- is a smaller piece to bite off, so I'll attempt to answer as follows: This statement connects back to the end of chapter 7 where Paul explains that the Law cannot deliver us from sin. Such deliverence is only available through the Gospel. Note that the phrase in this verse about condemnation does NOT mean that sin in the life of a believer is not to be eschewed. It means that the Gospel does not pronounce condemnation like the Law does. The Gospel is, instead, the cure for the condemnation that the Law has revealed. Those in Christ are made righteous by the atonement of our Lord Jesus. (2 Cor 5:21) You might also look at the verses John 3:18, 5:18-19, and Romans 5:18-19. Notice, however, that this is not simply a legal arrangement, though it is that... those in Christ have been changed internally (regenerated)... consequently, they do not "walk after the flesh." That means that they do not live a life set on satisfying the demands of the flesh. But they "walk after the Spirit." That means that they seek do those things that are pleasing to their God Who has won them this great salvation. Be careful here, as it is a mistake to make this a condition of salvation. It is not a condition, but rather a of those who are saved. I hope that helps a bit. There's a lot more that could be said, but maybe that will get you going in the right direction. In Him, Doc |
