NASB | Romans 7:5 For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 7:5 When we were living in the flesh [trapped by sin], the sinful passions, which were awakened by [that which] the Law [identifies as sin], were at work in our body to bear fruit for death [since the willingness to sin led to death and separation from God]. |
Bible Question: This scripture and also verse 8 are confusing to me. How are sinful passions aroused by the law? and in verse 8 how does sin take opportunity through the commandment? Thank you! |
Bible Answer: Greetings Lenore! Excellent question my friend! The best way to apporach these verses is by understanding the original function of the Law. The Law cannot and never could save. The Law cannot change our natures or make us righteous. The whole purpose of the Law was to reveal our sinfulness - it serves only to judge and to convict. Paul makes this point over and over again in Gal. 3 and in Romans 7. Gal. 3:11 - "Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, ‘The righteous will live by faith.'" Gal. 3:21 - " Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. 22 But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe." Gal. 3:23 - "Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. 24 So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith." Rom. 7:11 - "For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death." Rom. 7:13 - "Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! But in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful." So, what do verses 5 and 8 mean? Simply this, the Law serves to demonstrate our utter sinfulness in contrast to God's perfect holiness. No one, looking at the demands of the Law and then looking at his own life, can say that he does not deserve condemnation. We not only do the things that the Law prohibts, but we desire to do those things. It is almost like a parent telling a child that he cannot do something. Of course, he then has to do it! :-) In fact, the word 'take opprotunity' in the Greek was used of a military base of operations, or a starting point. Sin, by nature, is rebellion against God's righteous demands and commands. Sin uses the Law as it's starting point to reveal our sinfulness and true nature. I hope this helps!
