Subject: How much of Torah is to be followed? |
Bible Note: Hi Hank, Thank you for responding. Regarding my quoting Wikipedia, I might have been wrong, but I found it helpful and suggested it as a useful commentary, nothing more. I, myself, have been searching and reading the Scriptures most diligently on this subject for at least a couple of months. Much of this time has been spent in agonised prayer and exhaustive study, to the exclusion of other secular studies, as I truly want to follow HIM in the best possible way. I agree with Sha'ul completely in the whole book of Romans, as his words are part of the divinely inspired, complete Word of God. However, we must take the whole book of Romans into account and treat it as a whole and not just chapter by chapter. Here are some qoutes of Sha'ul from Romans; Romans 3:31 "Does it follow that we abolish Torah by this trusting? Heaven forbid! On the contrary, we confirm Torah." Romans 7:7 "Therefore, what are we to say? That the Torah is sinful? Heaven forbid! Rather, the function of the Torah was that without it, I would not have known what sin is. For example, I would not have become conscious of what greed is if the Torah had not said, "Thou shalt not covet."" Romans 7:12 "So Torah is holy: that is, the commandment is holy, just, and good." Romans 6:1-2 "So then, are we to say, "Let's keep on sinning, so that there can be more grace"? Heaven forbid! How can we, who have died to sin, still live in it?" Romans 6:15 "Therefore, what conclusion should we reach? "Let's go on sinning, because we're not under legalism but under grace"? Heaven forbid!" Romans 7:22,23 "For in my inner self I completely agree with God's Torah; but in my various parts, I see a different "torah," one that battles with the Torah in my mind and makes me a prisoner of sin's "torah," which is operating in my various parts." Romans 8:6-8 "Having one's mind controlled by the old nature is death, but having one's mind controlled by the Spirit is life and shalom. For the mind controlled by the old nature is hostile to God, because it does not submit itself to God's Torah - indeed, it cannot. Thus, those who identify with their old nature cannot please God." I believe that the Torah is not necessary for salvation, in fact, no one can be saved through it. Even in the Tanakh, it was through trusting and faith that the Patriarchs were saved. However, I believe that the Torah is a valuable part of the process of sanctification, but this can only happen when the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit), the one who leads us into all truths, guides us into this knowledge. It is also voluntary, we do not have to accept it or follow it, but as Sha'ul said 1Corinthians 6:12 and 10:23 ""Everything is permitted," you say? Maybe, but not everything is helpful. "Everything is permitted?" Maybe, but not everything is edifying." I can also find nowhere in the B'rit Hadashah (New Testement) where Sha'ul actually disobeyed any mitzvot (commandments), in fact, he claimed to be a P'rushim (Pharisee) in Acts 23:6 and 26:5 in front of the Sanhedrin and King Agrippa respectively. Personally, I do not think that he was a man prone to lying, neither do I think that he was just being cunning, he was just simply saying what he believed. A man that was taught under the great scholar Gamali'el and had always been zealous for Yahwah would not have said anything unless he himself practiced what he preached. Also, how could the rumours that Ya'akov (James) and the elders spoke about in Acts 21:20-24 be rumours if they were true. Again, in the same verse we find many believers, the early church, that are zealots for the Torah, how could this be if we were to seperate ourselves completely from the law. And when I speak of the Torah and mitzvot, I do not mean the Rabbinical traditions and oral laws, but what is commanded of us in the Tanakh by Yahwah Himself.
