NASB | Romans 7:18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 7:18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh [my human nature, my worldliness--my sinful capacity]. For the willingness [to do good] is present in me, but the doing of good is not. |
Bible Question:
I'd like to revisit this verse. (imo)Paul is qualifying the residence of goodness in the believer here. But, is there anything "good" in unregenerate man? Since man is made in the image of God, does this make him "good"? Is unregenerate man's dead spirit "good"? Please provide scripture to support your answers. |
Bible Answer: Genesis 1:31 says God saw all that he had made and behold it was very good. Man was created good. We were all made sinners through the fall. (Romans 5:19) Psalms says there is none that do good, not even one.(Psalm 53:3) Isaiah 64:6 says that even our good deeds are filthy. Mark 10:18 says that no one is good except God himself. Psalm 53 (and Psalm 14)says it the best, that wicked man-unregenerate man-has no goodness at all in him. Keep in mind that this is God's view of good, not man's. Man would say that anyone can do "good" deeds- helping others, being a good friend, etc. If these things are not done to glorify God, they cannot have good in them. Anything that is without God cannot be good. |
