AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 7:18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh [my human nature, my worldliness--my sinful capacity]. For the willingness [to do good] is present in me, but the doing of good is not. |
Subject: Paul's View of the 'Flesh'! |
Bible Note: Word Study - Flesh in Paul's Writings: Paul writes in Rom. 7:18, "For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the wishing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not." The question that has been raised on the forum is: Do Christians still struggle against the flesh or has Christ dealt with the flesh? A simple look at how Paul's uses this word answers the question for us. Allow me to simply post some of the verses using this word without commentary and you can decide for yourself. :-) 1) Rom. 7:5 - "For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter." 2) Romans 8:4 - "in order that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit." 3) Rom. 8:5 - "For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit." 4) Rom. 8:6 - "For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace," 5) Rom. 8:7 - "because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so;" 6) Rom. 8:8 - " and those who are in the flesh cannot please God." 7) Rom. 8:9 - "However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him." 8) Rom. 8:12 - "So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh" 9) Rom. 8:13 - "for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live." 10) Rom. 13:14 - "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts." 11) Gal. 2:20 -"“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me." 12) Gal. 5:13 - "For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." 13) Gal. 5:16 - "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh." 14) Gal. 5:17 - "For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please." 15) Gal. 5:19 - "Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, " 16) Gal. 5:24 - "Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires." 17) Gal. 6:8 - "For the one who sows to his own flesh shall from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit shall from the Spirit reap eternal life." 18) Eph. 2:3 - "Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest."
