NASB | Romans 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 6:4 We have therefore been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory and power of the Father, we too might walk habitually in newness of life [abandoning our old ways]. |
Bible Question: It's my contention that Paul is talking about baptism in view of sanctification here in Romans 6:4 when you look at the whole chapter in context. Is that accurate, or is he speaking of baptism in regards to justification/obtaining salvation? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Huron! When I first read your question, I didn't think you were on the right track. However, the more I have thought about it, the more I think you are correct. As Emmaus pointed out, Rom. 5 clearly deals with justification. However, I don't believe that justification continues to be the theme of chapter six. The issue of chapter six is whether or not we should 'keep on sinning'. This is clearly a sanctification issue. Paul uses the symbolic meaning of baptism to answer this question of whether or not we should keep on sinning. His answer is simply that baptism demonstrates that we have been untied with Christ in both His death and His resurrection. Our 'old man' is now dead. How then can we continue to live like the 'old man'? So, I would agree with your view my friend! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
