Bible Question:
I recently got into a discussion about the concept of forgiveness. This person believes you cannot truly forgive unless the person who wronged you asks for forgiveness. While I understand that and it is great if someone confesses they have wronged you but that is not necessarily always the case. I always believed that forgiveness is mainly a choice (whether the person has asked for forgiveness or not - Mark 11:25-26) and the main reason to choose to forgive is so that God can forgive us of our sins when we confess them. If we don't forgive he won't forgive us (Matt. 6:14-15). Am I right? |
Bible Answer: Greetings! Where your sins forgiven before you asked? When Christ died, His death was the propitiation for our sin, our debt was cancelled, forgiven; God's wrath against sin was satisfied. Our forgiveness was accomplished on Calvary; it s complete. We are forgiven but we receive forgiveness when we ask. Likewise, we are to forgive others, immediately, before they even ask! If we with hold forgiveness or make it conditional, then we fall into sin too! I liked what Doc told you - forgiveness is a description of a saved person. We ask God to forgive us, how dare we not forgive those who "tresspass against us!" In reality, all offense and insult (that we pridefully take in ourselves) is against God. Try looking at your hurts with this perspective - it might change the way you see things. Blessings, mommapbs |
