Bible Question:
Rom 4:9-12 i have never actually understood. Or even verses 1-12. I've read it like 30 times or something since i started reading the bible but i never get his point. It never has any meaning. Maybe i need to study the OT some more. Is there anyone who knows exactly what he is trying to say? And why, of all places, did the mark have to be on this particular place? |
Bible Answer: Dear kumkum, The best way to understand anything is within its context. That includes a word, a phrase, a sentence, a passage, and a book. Romans is particularly a book that can't be split into disparate pieces. You'll see people make all kinds of mistakes about it that way. We've seen that quite often here on the forum! Romans 4 is in the midst of Paul's discussion of the doctrine of justification (Romans 3:21-5:21). In particular, chapter 4 is an explanation of how justification is illustrated in Abraham. One might even say that Romans 4 answers the question, Was Abraham's salvation different from our own? Paul explains that Abraham was saved precisely the same way anyone is saved. God had to provide redemption. The first three chapters of Romans tell us that sin is universal to all men, no matter who they are, what they do, or what they believe. They are all condemned. They are all without excuse. God alone can provide their justification. Keep reading the whole book. Read it many different translations. Read it over and over. It isn't easy, but understanding the doctrine Paul is teaching is well worth the effort! God bless you in your studies. In Him, Doc |
