Subject: Outline of Romans 4 |
Bible Note: Greetings All! The essesential question of Romans 1-11 is, "What about the Jews?" "Why aren't they being saved, but the Gentiles are being saved?' Paul's answer is that God has not rejected them. They simply are going about everything the wrong why since they are still depending upon their nationality, their law, and their circumcision to get them to heaven. So, Paul establishes the common need of all mankind for a savior. In chapter one, he demonstrates that the Gentile is lost. In chapter two, he demonstrates that the Jew is lost. In chapter three, he summarizes that all mankind is lost and can only be justified by faith. Now, in chapter four, he highlights his point by looking at the example of Abraham. How was Abraham justified? Let's outline chapter four! A. Abraham and Justification - Rom. 4:1-25. 1. Justification is through faith, apart from works - Rom. 4:1-8. 2. Justification is through faith, prior to circumcision - Rom. 4:9-12. 3. Justification is through faith, prior to law - Rom. 4:13-15. 4. Justification is through faith, based upon God's promise - Rom. 4:16-25. What is interesting about this chapter is the way in which Paul kicks every leg out from under the Jew who was trusting in his own righteousness. All mankind stands in exactly the same place before God, as a sinner in need of a savior. We cannot earn salvation. We cannot work for it. We cannot deserve it. We can only accept God's gift of righteousness. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
