Bible Question:
Act 6:1 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. The problem related to widows and yet only men were set apart. Act 6:2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. Act 6:3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you *seven men* of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. It took 7 men to work on this. Act 6:4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. Act 6:5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: Act 6:6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. note laying on of hands. I am wondering about 7 and men and installed in office. Is this a brand new position? |
Bible Answer: I'm not sure it is a position but rather a call to service. We normally associate this with what we call Deacons in the church. No name was given these men at the time, however Phillip one of the seven is identified in various translations as a "deacon". See Amplified Acts 8:5, Acts 21:8, Mace NT Acts 21:9 In today's society we often get hung up over titles and positions. When in fact we should be concerning ourselves with our service to God. I have seen many a good man become basically worthless to the church when they became deacons. Apparently their previous work was done as lip service to be noticed because once they became Deacons it was as if they had arrived and felt they no longer needed to serve but instead to stand around and oversee. |
