Subject: Wat office did womn hold in early church |
Bible Note: Dear M, You asked, "What did the office of deacon entail in the early church?" The office of deacon is original with the Church. It appears to be a purely service oriented position. These people were to insure that needy members of the Church were cared for properly. See Acts 2 and 1 Timothy 3. The word diakonos simply means a minister, servant, or waiter, from the verb meaning to serve. In Romans 16 Paul is not speaking of an office. He simply is asserting that Phoebe has been helpful (i.e., of assistance) to himself and others in the Church. Every member of the Church is to be a minister to every other member of the Church.
