Bible Question:
As I have been reading through Deuteronomy, I am struck by some of the laws and commands that seem extreme to us today (i.e., certain dietary restrictions, not allowing anyone "unclean" into the camp, verses such as Deut. 13: 12-16 and Deut. 25:11-12). Can anyone comment on how certain practices have survived to this day and others have not? I know that Jesus came to bring us a new covenant, and that as Christians we are not bound by all the laws of the old covenant. However, certain practices remain - why? And if a Jew doesn't believe in Jesus, why are some the laws of the OT followed, but not others? Sorry if this question has been answered before - I couldn't find it. Thank you! |
Bible Answer: As you are looking at the old rites, ceremonies, and sacrifices of the Mosaic (the Laws of Moses) institution, the best book to read through is the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews (or just "Hebrews" in most bibles.) In this letter, Paul - an absolute expert on the Law being a devout Jew until his fateful conversion - was writing a letter to converted Jews adressing these Laws. The letter explains that all the Mosaic Laws have Christ for their object and end, and to have had neither intention nor meaning but in reference to Christ. I suggest reading the whole letter with a good commentary, but just to highlight the main arguments to answer your question: Heb 8:1-5 The tabernacle on Earth is a pale imatation of the true Heavenly Sanctuary in which Christ Jesus is our high priest. Heb 8:6-9 In a similar way, our New Covenant with God through the blood of Jesus, is far superior to the Old Covenant. Heb 8:10-12 This New Covenant was predicted by OT prophets Heb 8:13 The Old Covenant is abolished. The actual verse is: Heb 8:13 'When He said, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.' NASB Hebrews chapter 9 then goes on to compare the ritual of the old Covenant, and it's purpose compared with the new. The basic premise is that the OT Laws where no longer a physical action, but written on our hearts. As christians, we cannot simply commit a sin, then burn a calf to gain forgivness - we must sincerly repent all our sin in the whole fibre of our being - we must live in Christ, and Christ in us.
