Subject: What is sin? How is sin commited? |
Bible Note: Hi, Kcabm14... When we speak of doctrine in Christianity we mean the definition that I gave. As a Study Bible Forum, our focus would be deriving all that we can from Scripture about a given topic. There are many subjects that we might seek to understand (e.g., man's nature, God's nature, grace, election, salvation, regeneration, etc.). We'd call those doctrines. You asked, "...are you agreeing..." I would say that 1 John 3:4 is the best way to define sin in its legal sense. It is true that all sin is utterly heinous and warrants judgment (Romans 6:23). Jesus makes a comparison of one sin to another in places like John 19:11; Luke 7:47; 12:47-48, etc. Even the Law distinguishes one sin from another, for it does not advocate a single punishment for all transgressions, but varies the recompense. Clearly, since such passages appear to contradict, we must assume that there is a sense in which all sins are equivalent and another sense in which sins have distinguishing moral characteristics.
