Bible Question:
Hello all, new here. I am looking to be baptized, but do not belong to a church. I've always been a believer and lover of God, and was raised to know Jesus, just not in your typical "go to church on Sunday" home. We read and studied by ourselves. My Mother and I both want to be baptized without being forced to join a church, and found one with a very nice man who was A-OK with this. However he did say one disturbing thing, and I wanted other's opinions: He asked when I accepted Jesus Christ, and I said I was always a beliver, but he said I should have had an, "Ah-ha" moment of revilation. A moment that changed my life, and he discribed his own. I just always knew about Jesus, and always accepted him. Just like I know red is red, I know that Jesus is the Son of God who died for our sins. He kind of made me feel that I was missing something... Went home and jumped on the Bible for scripture on this and did find a few ways I'm slacking on in different areas (Thank you Lord for the insight) but nothing on this. I was wondering what others think. Not doubting my own faith, just confused at the pastor's position. Thanks for all responces and views! Go with God! Amanda |
Bible Answer: It appears the Pastor you spoke to, was merely looking for tell-tale signs and evidence that you had a genuine conversion. There are many individuals who have false professions of faith, and think they are saved, when actually they are not. I'm not saying thats the case with you, because I don't know you. Likewise, not personally knowing you, the Pastor you spoke with, was just doing the Pastorly thing, in attempting to determine whether or not you have a relationship with Christ Jesus, and what changes have occured in your life sine you received Christ by faith. If you have been saved, then changes must have taken place in your life. These changes can be sudden and abrupt, while other changes can occur gradually over time. Either way, it's not possible to become saved, and not have changes take place. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come. (2 Cor. 5:17 Christ gives us a new attitude, and we begin moving in a new direction. We now love the things of God, and our love for the things of the world decrease. We now love Christ and the brethren, and desire to fellowship with them, because we are all one in Christ. That means we are His family members, and have all things in common. It is just natural for family to want to spend time together, Therefore I would advise you to find a Bible believing church to regularly attend. Even if you don't want to become a member. Jesus calls us His flock or sheep, and sheep need each other. When we are in the flock, the good Shepherd provides protection from the wolves, who are ready to devour the lone sheep. One last thing. If you have been saved you will have the internal witness of the Holy Spirit, testifying with your spirit that you now are a child of God. Rom 8:16 The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God: It is good to desire baptism, but make sure it's for the right reason. NC |
