Bible Question: Thanks for your answer on slain in the spirit. It brings me to the question on "prophets". The ones who do personal prophesy on people. Where does that come from? Is it correct? Terry |
Bible Answer: Terry First prophesying is not fortune or future telling, preaching is a very real and valid form of prophesying and should be viewed as such. Going past this we can get into real trouble. Again God can and does what He desires. Most prophecy today is very innocuous, the sky is blue the grass is green and God loves us, and I fail to see any real purpose. It does more to call attention to ones self than any other one thing and I hold this type of prophecy in suspect. As I do any form of correction. If the church needs corrected or the pastor needs corrected God will do this without making it public. If it becomes public I have found it is because people have refused to repent and there is no turning back, God is bringing the ministry down. I have also found much of what is called personal prophesy today to be very disturbing and more an effort to ingratiate ones self into another’s life either to control or to be viewed as spiritual. All that are saved are inhabited with the Holy Spirit, He was sent to teach, guide and comfort us. God doesn’t need someone to do this. However if we refuse to listen I believe God can and will send someone to us to either through a sermon, something we read, something we hear, or someone else but never on an issue He hasn’t been already dealing with us on. God will use people to confirm something we are dealing with, but I would be very cautious of anything that suggests God would use someone to come to us and say sell your home, pack up you belongings and more to Seattle without first having placed this in our hearts. Prophesy should always encourage, edify, exhort and challenge us to be more committed to our walk in Christ. If it fails to do that then it is of man not God. EdB |
