Bible Question (short): Bible Versions Galore: Good or Bad? |
Question (full): To all you guys on the "Do you own a TNIV?" thread (and anyone else who may wish to weigh in): It might be useful to kick around some or all of the ideas suggested by the following questions: Do you find it soothing or confusing to have so many translations floating around? Do you think the gender-neutral versions good or bad, true to the text or pushing it too far? What do you consider the real motivation behind Bible publishers who come out with a new translation about as often as car makers come out with new models? Is there are real need for all these translations? Is a literal translation better or worse than a paraphrase, and why? Do so many versions tend to create a modern-day Tower of Babel atmosphere in churches and Bible study groups? Do you feel there is any likelihood of any one version rising above the commond herd to gain a lofty status anywhere near what the KJV has enjoyed for nearly four centuries? Do you think it's wise to stick to one version or play the field? Do you find study Bibles useful, or do you prefer to do your own digging? If you had to surrender all versions but one, which would you keep, and why? Have fun. Perhaps we all of us will learn something that will help us in our quest to learn more about God's word. --Hank |
