Subject: Test the spirits |
Bible Note: Greetings Ray! In Acts 19:21, Paul purposed 'in the spirit' [NASB, "Spirit" in NKJV] to go to Jerusalem, and then to Rome. However, 'spirit' in this verse may be referring to his own spirit, since sometimes it was not always the will of God for him to be where he himself wanted or wished to be (see Romans 1:10). God would put him where He wanted him to be, so that he could carry out his obligation to God (Romans 1:14,15). So one could very well say that Paul purposed in his own spirit to go places, when the Holy Spirit actually was leading him where he would go. Paul's 'goings' were of the Lord, and he could never understand some of the 'ways' in which he took, even though he could say that he would like to go here or there, if allowed and in accordance with the will of God. Certainly, whatever place that Paul prayed to go that was in accordance with the will of God, he would be able to go. In Acts 20:22, we see that Paul is 'bound in spirit' [NASB and NKJV]; that is, he was being led by the Holy Spirit towards Jerusalem, even though his 'spirit' did not wish to go there, since he awaited capture (v. 23). In this case, we see a case of where the Holy Spirit is leading Paul to a place where he does not want to go, even though he follows in obedience to the Lord (v. 24). In spirit, Paul does not wish to go there, but he must do so in obedience to the Holy Spirit. In this way, I believe that the NASB and NKJV translators would be entirely justified by not capitalizing 'spirit' in Acts 19:21 and 20:22, since it more accurately speaks of Paul's own spirit in 20:22, even though there is a difference in opinion (in capitalization, at least) at 19:21. If I had to make a decision, I believe that it is Paul's own spirit in 19:21 as well, since it is he himself who is doing the 'purposing', and not the Holy Spirit. :-) Blessings to you, Makarios And yes, I used that same Ryrie Study Bible for this post as I did for the post written on 06/17/2001! Perhaps in 2 1/2 years, I will contribute to this thread yet again! That is, if it is the will of the Holy Spirit. :-) |
