Subject: Is speaking in tongues a necessity ? |
Bible Note: Marcel in Burlington, Ontario Once again you speak about which you know nothing. The reference you gave concerns Oneness Pentecostals which is a long way from the Pentecostal doctrine as seen in the Book of Acts. There are many Pentecostals, Assemblies of God, Church of God Cleveland Tenn. that are Pentecostal yet hold orthodox theology. Oneness Pentecostal is Antitrinitarian and therefore considered to be false. The debate that rages between Pentecostal and non is whether the manifestations, in particular the three so called sign gifts prophecy, tongues and interpretations, which are seen mainly in the Book of Acts but also glimpsed in the other New Testament books, have ceased at the end of apostolic age or not. Many feel they have and still others feel they haven’t. Today we see many abuses of the manifestations, and in many cases people seek the manifestations rather than seeking God. However Holy Spirit was promised to empower us to be Christ’s witnesses and along with the Holy Spirit came the manifestations of His power. I see no conclusive proof these manifestations have ceased however I will readily agree they are often counterfeited and abused by those that seek something other than God. They also can be abused to the point of becoming legalistic but the belief in them is not in itself wrong or legalistic. EdB |
