AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 2:4 And they were all filled [that is, diffused throughout their being] with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues (different languages), as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out [clearly and appropriately]. |
Bible Question: I know several christians who claim to be able to speak in tongues and be slain in the spirit. Is this truly a gift of the spirit we still have today, or was that just part of the pentecost described in Acts 2? I am a born again christian and belong to a baptist church where the spirit is felt however, everyone remains upright and worships in english. Ive attended a revival before and accepted Christ there but I never could get so moved to speak in tongues or fall over. The spirit always brings tears of joy and I know God loves and accepts me as his own. The question I guess is then is what do I tell those who think if you dont have this ability you are not saved? |
Bible Answer: Hi Jilliebean, it is a lie that if you don't speak in tongues, you are not saved. What jcsav said is true, tongues are not of our own ability. The Holy Ghost is the same now as during Pentecost - no new movements or anything like that. It is written in 2 Timothy 3:16, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. . ." If we are going to do away with part of it, we might as well do away with it all. (kalos had given a website with Q/A on the baptism of the Holy Ghost and tongues. It's in line with the word of God.
