AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, "Repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways, accept and follow Jesus as the Messiah] and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ because of the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. |
Bible Question: I want to get Baptized, but I don't know where to do it. I go to my boyfriends church (methodist) and have established friends there. But I have a cousin who is a minister for a non-denominational church. Would it be better to go to my boyfriends church in the hope that we would be married someday, or do I play it safe and go to my cousins church? Or does it even matter where I go? |
Bible Answer: Praise God that you have the desire to be Baptized. Although I would be careful where you chose to be baptized. The Scripture I really wanted to highlight was: Acts 2:37-39 37Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" 38Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39"For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself." Some denominations consider baptism as automatically making you a member of their church and not just as becoming part of Christ's Church and His body of believers. Some will baptize you and then it's up to you if you just want to attend or become a member. Also, different denominations have different beliefs as to what baptism is. Such as if infants should be baptized and why or why not, or if a person should be old enough (called the age of accountability) to actually believe in Christ themselves and repent of their sins and then be baptized. Some believe in immersion, some in pouring and some sprinkling with water. BibleGateway.com is an excellent site for looking up a word in different Bible translations to find all the occurances and study the Scriptures. Just go to their site and type in Baptize in the keyword search area and specifically read through the verses in the Book of Acts. See what you believe Baptism is, then find a church that believes what you do. But please make this a decision based on what God is leading you to believe and not just a quick thing to do because your dating someone. It's much more than that. And if you end up getting married later you can still decide as a couple where you will attend church. Your new friends should be happy for you no matter where you decide to get Baptized. |
