AMPLIFIED 2015 | Acts 16:1 Now Paul traveled to Derbe and also to Lystra. A disciple named Timothy was there, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer [in Christ], however, his father was a Greek. |
Bible Question: Who was Timothy ? The Timothy I am referring to is the Timothy that Apostle Paul was writing to in 1Timothy and 2Timothy. What kind of person was he, and why was Paul writing to him. I'm confused by the letter. Can someone please explain to me ? Was Timothy fearful concerning something ? Or, was he just full of fear period ? |
Bible Answer: Dear Colton, Timothy had a Greek father and a Jewish mother (Acts 16:1). His mother's name was Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5). Timothy accompanied Paul on some of his missionary journeys (Acts 16:3). Sometimes Timothy went in Paul's stead to minister to various churches (1 Corinthians 4:17). He was, tradition holds, the pastor of the church of Ephesus. It is also believed that he died at over eighty years of age when beaten by Pagans. Paul was Timothy's pastor. Timothy was being trained by Paul to be a pastor. Timothy went on then to teach other men to be pastors. (Interestingly enough, this is the sole method used by many Primitive Baptist churches. They tend to eschew seminary in favor of this mentoring process.) Paul's letters to Timothy were instructional in nature, helping him to serve the Church in his capacity as pastor. Hence, these epistles are referred to as "pastoral." In Him, Doc |
