Bible Question:
John 6: 44"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the "last day." Thoughts about John 6:44 "Last day" is singular in all translations of scripture I have. It seems to refer to Jesus resurrecting people. There are many days after the resurrection, so it seems not to mean the last day with never another day to come after it. I assume this speaks of the 1st resurrection, since He is resurrecting people the Father has drawn to Him (Jesus) Question: What is it about this day of resurrection that it is called the last day ? This is the last day of WHAT ??? What ceases in this day that will never occur again ? |
Bible Answer: This is an excellent question, and I would caution you against trying to impose any preconceptions you may have about prophecy on this passage. This passage runs contrary to some popular misconceptions about the order of end-time events. As you point out, "last day" should be the last day OF SOMETHING. The great tribulation is counted in days: Dan 12:11 "From the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, [there will be] 1,290 days. Dan 12:12 "How blessed is he who keeps waiting and attains to the 1,335 days! Dan 12:13 "But as for you, go [your way] to the end; then you will enter into rest and rise [again] for your allotted portion at the end of the age." Also see Rev 12:6, Rev 11:3, Mat 24:29 The Bible clearly descibes the "days" of tribulation. Then the Bible describes "The Day of the Lord". Matt 24:36 ΒΆ "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. Matt 24:30 "And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the SON OF MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power and great glory. Luke 17:24 "For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part of the sky, shines to the other part of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day. 1Th 5:1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you. 1Th 5:2 For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. 2Pe 3:8 But don't forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night. Clearly, "the last day" follows the days of tribulation, followed by "the day of the Lord". Perhaps "the last day" terminates "this present evil age" Gal 1:4 who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us out of this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father -- Gal 1:5 to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. |
