Subject: Did Jesus baptize? |
Bible Note: Hi Hank, Thank you for the 1 Corinthians reference. I think that it is good to compare John the baptiser and Paul. I think that John the baptist could say with Paul, "Was it from me that the word of God first went forth? Has it come to me only?" I think that both John and Paul agree that they are "not fit"; one not fit to untie His sandal and the other not fit to be called an apostle. John the baptist was just a messenger, a preparer for the way of Jesus. While he was in prison he wondered about the witness of Jesus. I believe that verse 27 and 31 show that John the baptist did not receive the witness of Jesus. Therefore I would put quotation marks after verse 32 to show that was the end of quote for John the Baptist. It is the writer, John, who received His witness and has put his seal to it. John 3:33,34, "He who has received His witness has set his seal to this, that God is true. For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure." Personally, I would say that He gives the spirit without measure. John received the witness from heaven and recognized that Jesus was sent from God and that He spoke the words of God. John the baptist said that no man can receive anything, unless it is given him from heaven. The writer, John, received the witness of Him who came from heaven and gave us this God-breathed gospel.
