Bible Question:
In John 3:26, a Jewish man tells John the Baptist of another who is baptizing. He refers to him as the one "who was with you on the other side of the jordon, the one you testified about". JtB replies "A man can receive only what is given him from heaven." 1. Is the other man Jesus? 2. What does JtB mean by his reply? |
Bible Answer: "He who was with you beyond the Jordan" (John 3:26) is a reference to Jesus. Their statement "He (Jesus) is baptizing" is not to be exegeted that Jesus personally performed baptisms, because John 4:2 says that "Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples" performed this work. John the Baptist's response (beginning in v.27) to this group (v.25) is comparable to Paul's assessment of himself in his role of ministry of the gospel of Christ: "But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I but the grace of God which was with me." (1 Cor. 15:10). .... This man John, this forerunner of "The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29), this humble prophet who considered himself unworthy to loose the sandal strap of the Messiah, continues in John 3:27-36 to focus the spotlight off himself and on Christ, saying, "He must increase, but I must decrease." (v.30). The joy of this humble servant John was fulfilled merely to stand and hear his Master's voice and be counted as a friend of the Bridegroom. (v.29). John the Baptist is a sterling example of selflessness, humility, and the joy that comes with obedience to Christ. --Hank |
