Bible Question:
John 3:5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." (NASB) Concerning the above verse, I have heard various thoughts about what the term "born of water" means Some think the "water" refers to water baptism Others think the "water" refers to our physical birth - the watery womb of our mother from which we were born of earthly parentage. Others think "water" refers to the word of God as the washing element. So what are the thoughts of this community concerning the meaning of "water" in John 3:5? The more responses the better Could you also please provide an answer as to why you believe as you do about this? |
Bible Answer: Hello New Creature I see the verse as a reference to: Ezekiel 36:25-27 (ESV) I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. [26] And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. [27] And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. So the application of water is a cleansing (Cf. Levites in Num 8:7) the Lord does by the Holy Spirit and the Word. Steve |
