AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 21:15 ¶ So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these [others do--with total commitment and devotion]?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You [with a deep, personal affection, as for a close friend]." Jesus said to him, "Feed My lambs." |
Bible Question: why do you think Jesus questioned Peter's love three consecutive times in a single conversation? |
Bible Answer: I don't claim to have the answer however, the answer may possibly be found by looking in Greek text to see which type of love Jesus was referring to, and what type of love Peter was speaking of. John 21:15-17 could be rendered as follows - v.15 Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest(agape) thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I like (phileo) thee. v.16 Simon, son of Jonas, lovest (agape) thou me? He said unto him, Yea Lord; thou knowest that I like (phileo) thee. v.17 Simon, son of Jonas, likest (phileo) thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, likest (phileo) thou me? And he said unto him, Lord thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I like (phileo)thee.
