Subject: Why more fish? |
Bible Note: Greetings Emmaus! God seems to repeat a message or theme for me over a period of time.( Aside from giving me what I NEED to know, I think I am a slow learner !) Recently, that message has been from John 15:5, "Apart from Me you can do nothing." With that in mind, these are my observations on this passage: The disciples purpose to go fishing yet they catch nothing. How often do the plans WE make fail to produce the desired result? Jesus calls attention to their condition. ("Apart from Me you can do nothing.") Although we too may recognize things that are wrong, how often do we respond by ignoring, denying or making excuses for our problems?( ie, I was fishing in the wrong spot.) How often do we try to solve things on our own? (Thankfully, the disciples demonstrated the correct response - they obeyed God.) When they followed Jesus' directions, they caught more fish than they were able to haul in the boat ("THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM." 1 Cor 2:9) In considering the bread, fish and charcoal fire, see Is 44 and esp v.19 for a possible contrast. Jesus is the source of all we need for life and Godliness (2 Peter 1:3) "Apart from Me you can do nothing." He calls them to "dine" on what He has prepared ('Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. Rev 3:20) He asks them to bring some of the fish they have caught. (A reminder of their circumstance and HIS provision! - "Apart from Me, you can do nothing.") This same message is the one that Peter was given. "Tend, shepherd or feed my sheep." What is the "food" we are to give? The Word of God! It is the gift of God to us, it is not of ourselves - (Eph 2:8-9) again, "Apart from Me you can DO, nothing." Well, these are my thoughts for now. Isn't God's Word SO amazing! He speaks to us in a personal way, giving exactly what EACH of us needs! Blessings, mommapbs |
