AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 20:1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw the stone [already] removed from the [groove across the entrance of the] tomb. [Matt 28:1-8; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-10] |
Bible Question: I run into a snag when I compare the resurrection in John to the resurrection in Luke.In John ,Mary M visits the tomb, goes and tells Peter and John, then returns with them. After Peter and John leave she stays and then encounters the angles. In Luke 24,the womem go to the tomb encounter the angles then go back and tell the eleven. Peter then goes to the tomb wanting to see for himself. |
Bible Answer: Greetings GuitarMonkey! Luke 24 (written from historical accounts and that which was told to him by Paul) and John 20 (written from John's eyewitness perspective) are two accounts of the resurrection that are slightly different, based on their own point of view. Luke used personal investigation and arrangement, basing his Gospel on the testimony from "eyewitnesses and servants of the word" (1:2). In Luke 24, the women (Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, etc.. [v.10]) found two angels at the tomb who tell them that Jesus has risen, and then they went and told the disciples. In verse 12, Peter runs to the tomb, only to find the linen wrappings. In John 20, Mary Magdalene (alone here) goes to the tomb and noticed that the stone had been rolled away. She then immediately goes to Peter and John, who run to the tomb to investigate. John outruns Peter to get there first, and they both find the linen wrappings. Then Peter and John left, with only Mary Magdalene at the tomb. Mary then finds two angels and eventually Jesus Himself there. After this, she goes back to the disciples and announces that she has seen the resurrected Jesus. Now, both accounts are true. :-) Both have basically the same people involved and the same outcomes. However, the details (who told whom, who outran whom, how many angels, and the sequence of events) are slightly different, and I would attribute that to the difference in the point of view that our writers are writing from. John's account is much more in depth and complete. Therefore, I would probably place a little more emphasis on John's account. However, Luke's account is very important as well, because it supports the authenticity of John's more "complete" account by confirming what is most important about these passages, spoken from an entirely different source. This is not to say that the other women in Luke's account weren't there with Mary Magdalene, since John's account does not say that Mary was the 'only' woman who first came to the tomb (although it appears as such). It is possible that Mary Magdalene was the only woman who 'returned' with Peter and John to investigate after she initially came to tell them that the stone was rolled away. So both accounts are true, but there are subtle differences (that both complement each other), spoken from different points of view. I'm sure that if you and I witnessed the same event, we would most likely include all of the pertinent details (what was most important), such as who was there and what basically happened. However, we would not tell our accounts in exactly the same way, nor would we include the same details or describe the same events in exactly the same way. The same is true for the Gospels. This is a beautiful thing about the Gospels! Blessings to you, Makarios |
