Bible Question:
Why did the women come back to anoint Jesus' body, if Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea had already done it? Check out John 19:38-42; Mark 16:1 and Luke 24:1. Songbirdca |
Bible Answer: Dear Brother, Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I was scanning over the forum and I came acrossed your question, and thought that I would try to answer it as best as I can. My answer is based on the four gospels and their account of this story as well as the little knowledge that I have in regards to Jewish customs. It is interesting that the only scripture that mentions Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea is in the gospel of John. It does mention an impressive amount of perfume and myrrh. However I believe the answer to your question lies in the text. The time of the burial is just before the sun sets of Friday night, which would be the day of preparation for the Sabbath. According to Jewish custom once the sun set, the Sabbath had begun. I believe that although Nicodemus and Joseph had buried Jesus that they could only do so much, and the women wanted to anoint the body more due to their deep love for Christ. This is the best answer that I can give, and I do hope that it is helpful. In Christ, Paul Is. 6:8 Pastor/Founder: Blue Bonnet Ministries ”I am only one, but still I am one.
