Bible Question: When Jesus said, "It is finished", what is He saying is finished? |
Bible Answer: Dear Convict, So much meaning in a single Greek word! Jerome translated this as "Consummatum est." I like that, since it extends the English word "finished" with the notion "consummation." Christ was speaking of the work of His atonement. It was, at that moment, conclusively complete, fully finished, and perfectly performed. In an utterly unique way in all of time and history, the Law was satisfied (Hebrews 10:10). The Messianic prophecies were fulfilled. Redemption has been accomplished and secured (Daniel 9:24). The ransom was completely paid for the elect (Matthew 20:28). The redemption of God's own people was accomplished, nothing more needing to be added to it. This ushers in a new age, the Church age. "Now that is the climax. That's no groan and curse of a victim; that's the proclamation of a victor, that's the shout of triumph: 'It is finished.' Jesus knew everything was done because He knew everything. He had control of every detail, He had mapped out every detail in eternity past, and every detail occurred exactly as He had planned." --John MacArthur In Him, Doc |
