AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 19:30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and [voluntarily] gave up His spirit. |
Bible Question: I would like to get some opinions on why Jesus received the wine on the second offer when He didn't on the first. Thanks |
Bible Answer: The wine mixed with gall that was offered the first time (Matt. 27:34) was a sedative; had He accepted it, He would not have been alert enough to complete the work He had been sent to do, including ensuring that all the prophecies about Him would be fulfilled -- see Psalm 22 for several of these, such as crying out, "My God, why have You forsaken me"; bystanders hurling insults at Him; their very words, "He trusts in God, let God rescue Him!" He also had to remain alert because even from the cross He had work to do -- forgiveness to extend, His mother to comfort and care for, prayer for those who were mocking Him -- and to endure the full suffering for our sin. See Jn. 19:28 -- "knowing that all was now completed and so that Scripture would be fulfilled ..." |
