Bible Question:
I am interested in the word (and I have NO idea how to spell it) tetelisti? tetalisty? It means "it is finished"? Perhaps in latin? Does anyone know what I am talking about? Thanks in advance for your response *S* |
Bible Answer: Greetings Gad! The word is 'tetelesti'. It is the Perfect, Passive, Indicative, 3rd Person, Singular form of the Greek verb 'teleo'. 'Teleo' (Strongs # 5055) means 'to bring to an end, to complete, or to fulfill'. 'Tetelesti' means that something has been completed by someone else. Here is what the Bible Knowledge Commentary says about this word. ******************************************* The sixth word or saying that Jesus spoke from the cross was the single Greek work tetelestai which means It is finished. Papyri receipts for taxes have been recovered with the word tetelestai written across them, meaning ?paid in full.? This word on Jesus? lips was significant. When He said, ?It is finished? (not ?I am finished?), He meant His redemptive work was completed. ******************************************* I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
