NASB | John 19:11 Jesus answered, "You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 19:11 Jesus answered, "You would have no authority over Me at all if it had not been given to you from above. For this reason the sin and guilt of the one who handed Me over to you is greater [than your own]." |
Bible Question: What is meant by the greater sin? |
Bible Answer: Pilate had sinned in that he had had Jesus scouraged and abused by the Roman soldiers by this time in the narrative. Later, he would have Jesus, a man he knew to be innocent, crucified. However, the sin of the Jews (and Judas) was worse because it was born out of envy. It was also done in the full knowledge of the miracles and teachings of Jesus. I would never gainsay Christ, for He is judge, and it is His puragotive to evaluate sin. However, it is a good time, I think, to point out just how truly horendous is sin. I am mindful of the following quote by Jonathan Edwards (1705-1758), "Any sin is more or less heinous depending upon the honor and majesty of the one whom we had offended. Since God is of infinite honor, infinite majesty, and infinite holiness, the slightest sin is of infinite consequence. The slightest sin is nothing less than cosmic treason when we realize against Whom we have sinned." |
