Bible Question: I have been a Christian for about 25 years and was taught that we pray to God through Jesus Christ His Son (ie, in Jesus' name I pray). I have been asked why I do this and why I do not pray directly to God. I assume there is Biblical authority for this, but I have been unable to find it. Thanks for your help. - kak |
Bible Answer: We do pray directly to God in the name of Jesus. Jesus told us to pray to God in His name in John 16:23-24 “And in that day ye shall ask Me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive that your joy may be full.” To pray in the name of Jesus means to pray with the authority of Jesus or to pray as though it were Jesus Himself praying. He has all authority (Matthew 28:18 and Revelation 5:12-13) and He’s given us the right to use that authority by praying in His name. It’s like when they used to send messages long ago. There would be a wax seal on the outside and stamped in that seal would be initials, or a logo that represented the signature or authority of another person. The seal was placed so that you would know if the letter had been tampered with because you wouldn’t be able to make out the stamp of authority. We see an example of this in Shakesphere’s Hamlet. Hamlet opens a letter sealed by the newly crowned King Claudius and then changes the letter and re-seals it with the seal of King Hamlet (his recently deceased father). There’s a very long movie version of Hamlet where this scene is well done and you see him clearly sealing the letter that way. I always think of it when I hear teaching on praying in Jesus name because that illustration is what finally made it click for me. Our prayers are like letters to God sealed and stamped with Jesus’ authority when we say “in Jesus name, amen.” Let me know if I can be of anymore help. Jesified |
