Bible Question (short): Can we love as Jesus did? |
Question (full): Is it really possible for people to love one another as Jesus did (and still does)? If I may think out loud for a moment to help shed light on what I am asking. It seems to me that if Jesus commands this, it should follow that he thinks we are capable. And yet I can not point to a single instance of love that comes close to the love of Jesus. I mean he willingly went to the cross to save me. If someone has an example of this commandments fulfillment please let me know. As far as I know I love my wife, but I find it hard to do the dishes for her, much less go to the cross for her. And that is my WIFE, not just someone I meet on the street. I know at this moment how much I love, and it doesn’t compare to Jesus. Will I ever be able? Now I recognize that before we can love anything we must love God. For God is the source of love and without him...well do I even need to finish that? So I restate, Can I love anyone as much as Jesus loves me? Can I fulfill this commandment? If the answer be yes, then what must I do? If the answer be no, then how close can I get? If Jesus' love can be measured as being a big as his body, can the love I have for anyone be as big as a mustard seed, bigger? Thank you in advance. For what it is worth I love you. God bless and peace be with you. Philip |
