Subject: Who did Isaiah see in John 12:41 |
Bible Note: Greetings Beethoven! I would have to respectfully disagree because the context is about Jesus. Let's examine this passage and see what it actually says. John 12:37 states that in spite of the miracles of Jesus, they (the Jews) still would not believe in Him. Who is the subject? Jesus! What is the issue? Faith in Jesus! John 12:38 states that their unbelief was a fulfillment of Is. 53:1. John 12:39-40 states that their unbelief is prophesied in Is. 6:10. John 12:41 states that Isaiah wrote these things because he saw His glory. Who has John been discussing? Jesus! What has John been discussing? Failure to believe in Jesus. Why would John suddenly change the subject now? John 12:42 demonstrates that John has not changed the subject by stating that some leaders did in fact believe. Believe in whom? According to John 12:37, 'him' is Jesus. 'Him' in John 12:41 is also Jesus. 'Him' in John 12:42 is also Jesus. To make 'him' in John 12:41 refer to someone other than Jesus makes no sense in the context of the passage. John is not discussing a general lack of faith in God, but a specific lack of faith in Jesus. So, I ask you my friend, how John 12:41 could be referring to anyone but Jesus in the context of the passage? Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
