Bible Note: Dear Ed, Thank you for the expession of your brotherly love. Even my fraternal brother and I get on one anothers nerves occassionaly and yet I know he would give his own life to save mine. Thats just the way it is in families. Where I still think you have me wrong is in the area of proselytizing. I am not trying to make arminians into calvinsts per se, but am simply stating what I believe to be the "gospel truth". Calvin was a wonderful theologian. Even Joseph Aminius encouraged his students to study Calvin and not simply to learn how to refute him either! But the term "calvinism" is just a nickname for an entire system of theology. It is called "Reformed Theology" and has existed and grown for almost 500 years. It covers every book, chapter and verse in the Bible.(which is why I cannot comment on one word without being accused of pushing so-called calvinism) It has adherents the likes of John Knox, John Bunyon, George Whitfield, Jonathon Edwards, C.H. Surgeon, Matthew Henry, Martin Lloyd-Jones; Puritans, Pesbyterians and Baptists and on and on. It is not a new or strange theology. It is the historic theology of the PROTESTANT FAITH since we broke away from the tyranny of 16th century rule of popes over the church. Having said that, I do not hold to the infallibility of mere men. Sola Scritura is my battle cry! And I strive to argue on that basis period. Who can do othewise and still deserve to recieve a serious hearing from fellow christians? But when you have once been stigmatized and have a label attached to you by others, you can expect to be maligned and misunderstood. But, God be praised, my skin is growing thicker, (I just hope my head is'nt) and I am praying for grace that our God will season my words with love. Brother John |
