Bible Question:
I have been talking to a Jehovah's Witnesses. We were discussing Hebrews 1. I was trying to point out the diety of Christ in Hebrews 1-9. As you know parts of this scripture reference the Psalms 45. My questions is: If the Psalms is addressing the king. Is the Psalms calling the king God. as in Hebrews. The Jehovah's Witnesses, say even though the king is being called a god doesn't mean he is the One True God as it in in Hebrews. He says that Jesus is being referenced as a God but not the one True God. Saying that God in this context means a God. And he goes on to say how can God, Your God ..be one in the same? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Noveta! As it has been said to you on the previous posts... the Jehovah Witnesses do not accept the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and the Holy Spirit) as the fullness of God... they wish to view Christ as a human with super powers but always a subordinate creature; while accepting the Holy Spirit only as an "energy" coming from God. There are so many Scripture passages that reveal to us the Trinity (though never by the explicit term "Trinity") that a person must be either totally incapable or reasoning or must be blind and not have access to a Bible on braille or the latest speaking Bibles. In the Old Testament Yahweh makes it clear that He alone is God and that before Him there existed no god and that after Him no god was formed (Isaiah 43:10); He also states that He will not give His glory (power, authority...) to another... Yet, He shares His Throne with the Lamb (Revelation 5:12, 5:13, 6:16, 7:10, 7:17, 22:1, 22:3)... I understand that they twist every single Scripture that points to Jesus and the Holy Spirit as being God... but how do you suppose that an ancient and powerful God as our God is will allow a mere human to usurp His Power in His Face? It is no coincidence that the prophets revealed that Jesus is God, nor that the Apostles revealed that Jesus and the Holy Spirit are two of the three Divine Persons of God... Just look at the following two examples: When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have come down to us in human form!" Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker. The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them. But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: "Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them. (Acts 14:11-15) In this first example (Acts 14:11-15) Paul and Barnabas quickly reacted to the crowd who were insinuating that they were gods--they rejected their profession of divinity and clarified that there is only One who is God! The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you." So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me." (Matthew 28:5-10) A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." (John 20:26-29) In Matthew 28:5-10 and John 20:26-29, we find Jesus being worshipped and He does not chastise, correct or reject the actions of the disciples… they have come to understand that He is God and Jesus does not correct them because as He had stated that particular fact in so many ways: “I am in the Father and the Father is in me!” (John 14:10-11) God Bless!
