Bible Question:
Please clarify the difference of a disciple and an apostle. Why does the bible use both names? |
Bible Answer: An Apostle may be a Disciple, but Disciples are not always Apostles. A disciple is one who follows a teacher as the disciples followed Jesus. An Apostle is "one who is sent" on a mission, such as the 12 Apostles and Paul who we sent to all the world to proclaim the Gospel All the Apostles were disciples, but most of the disiples were not Aposles. The word aposlte means, one who is sent. The main Apostles are the original twelve called by Jesus (Matt 10:1-15; Mark 3:13-14; Luke 6:12-16), plus Matthias who was chosen by lot and the Jesus after the Ascenion to replace Judas (Acts 1:15-26) and then Paul who was called by Jesus on the road to Damascus ( Acts 9). Apostle means "one who is sent", but usually refers to the twelve chosen by Jesus. "Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed Him. These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them" Judas after hanging himself was replaced by Matthias in Acts. paul is also called an Apostles because he was called by Christ in a special way on the road to Damascus Acts 9) after Jesus had ascended into heaven. Whenever all the names of the Apostles are listed Peter is always first and Judas Iscariot is always last. Matt 10:2-5, Mark 3:16-19, Luke 6:14-17, Acts 1:13 Disciples are followers of Jesus. So the Aposles are also disciples. |
