Subject: cursing? |
Bible Note: Dear Javelin, I believe that WOS is correct on this issue. In the case of Elisha, we are talking about a very special office in Israel during the time of the Mosaic covenant. Under the covenant of grace we are minister grace with our words rather than cursing (Ephesians 4:29; James 3:9-11). Indeed, we have the admonition of Christ Himself on this subject in an even recorded in Luke 9:54-55. Galatians 1:8 and 1 Corinthians 16:22 are instances of excommunication from the church. The church was given this authority by our Lord. As the 1644 BCF divines put it, "Christ has likewise given power to his whole Church to receive in and cast out, by way of Excommunication, any member; and this power is given to every particular Congregation, and not one particular person, either member or Officer, but the whole. (Acts 2:47; Romans 16:2; Matthew 18:17; 1 Corinthians 5:4; 2 Corinthians 2:6-8)" No, we are called to intercession, not to demanding judgment upon people with whom the Father is still longsuffering.
